This Thursday mê phim welcomes Mervin Espana to show a selection of Filipino short film at Himiko Cafe. Mervin has recently curated the 6th annual South East Asian Cinemas Conference here in HCMC.

Mervin is also currently carrying out research on new creative cultures, particularly non-gallery based contemporary art practice, media-based art, new music, film- and video-making practice in Saigon.

All films will be subtitled in English

Using a Pangasinan-language translation of Filipino-American writer-activist Carlos Bulosan’s 1942 poem “Landscape with Figures” as a narration, a young expatriate Filipino filmmaker working in the Middle East sends surreal, random and found digital images of displacement and longing to his loved ones in the Pangasinan region in the northern part of the Philippines.

Manatad“Hungkag” tells the story of one particular night in the city seen through three different Individuals. Isa, a convenience store clerk with depression; Josemari, a gang member struggling with his conscience on his first murder assignment; and Caloy, a taxi driver in a point of desperation. The three lives interconnect within a night’s series of events.

The film received the Best Thesis Award for Narrative Film from the UP Film Institute this year.

Through an obscure company offering memory erasure services, Julia Salazar relives the past forty years of her life. As she goes through rooms containing her memories, she revisits an old affair—one that occurred right before her marriage.
Hinagap at Gunita is loosely based on Paz Benitez’s "Dead Stars" and Edith Wharton’s The Age of Innocence. It is a recipient of an achievement award for narrative film from the UP Film Institute this year.

ANG SANDALING SADYA NINA LIRE AT ISA (Lire and Isa's Unforgettable Encounter)

Lire is on a special delivery errand for his father. Isa, meanwhile, is armed with a grocery list and a message. Their paths cross in the way to the barrio. In any other place, it would be a normal afternoon where children meet, share songs, toys and stories, maybe even take a liking to each other. But it is Christmas time in the Philippine countryside, amidst a long standing guerilla war. Here, boys and girls have no choice but to grow up fast, because in a place like this, even kids cannot be so innocent.

tuần vừa rồi có duyên với phim. thứ 5 vừa chiếu phim xong thì hôm thứ bảy có đi dự một buội thảo về phim và có chiếu phim ngắn (link) theo lời mời của Mervin, một curator người Philippin. ngạc nhiên là toàn thấy người nước ngoài xem, hông thấy bóng dáng ai người Việt mình. từ 3h-5h, được xem 2 phim, trong đó có "cuốc xe đêm" của Bùi Thạc Chuyên. xong ra, thấy mấy anh nhờ mình gọi rạp hỏi xuất chiếu "Để mai tính" mấy giờ, rồi mấy ảnh hối hả chạy đi xem cho kịp giờ

hôm nay 4 người trong ban tổ chức và 3 đạo diễn trẻ đến Himiko chơi. tưởng là xong trong một buổi, ai dè, nói qua lại một lúc cũng hợp rơ, nên quyết định tổ chức cho ảnh một buổi gặp gỡ với mấy bạn trẻ làm phim ngắn ở Sài Gòn. vì gần như họ không có thông tin, quen biết gì hết với mọi người ở đây. vậy nên, bạn nào làm phim ngắn hay có bạn bè làm phim ngắn muốn trao đổi, giới thiệu tác phẩm của mình thì mang phim đến Himiko chơi nha. dự kiến là sau thứ 5 tuần này (gọi cho mình để xác nhận và biết thời gian cụ thể, 095 888 1908)

do đây là buổi làm quen ngẫu hứng nên không nằm trong phạm trù tổ chức chuyên nghiệp. chỉ là cuộc gặp gỡ trong một nhóm người làm phim với người quan tâm đến, nên tình hình là mình không có kinh phí thuê máy chiếu, nếu ai có máy chiếu cho mượn trong 2 tiếng để xem phim luôn thì tuyệt quá (màn hình bằng khung tranh tự chế thì ở Himiko có rồi). không thì có thể xem trên laptop và nói chuyện thân mật thôi vậy

Hello Himiko

Below is something you can relay to the people I'm meeting this Friday. Since we'll be meeting mostly film and video people, I've written something the highlights my film/video-related activities:

I'm a curator, cultural activist and research-based arts practitioner based in Metro Manila, Philippines and Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei Darussalam.

My creative activities started in late 1999, at first exploring poetry, text-based art and performance, later investigating video and new media then various forms experimental documentation and animation techiniques. My curatorial activities in film started in 2001 by holding film screenings and discussions platforms. Since 2005 I've been involved in several film and video screening, as well as media-art related platforms. My current affiliations in film and video include being programmer-at-large for Urban Nomad Film Festival, programming consultant for University of the Philippines Film Institute and founder of SHRT-CRCT touring short-format film and video screening platform. I'm also part of the organizing committee of the Association for Southeast Asian Cinemas, which organized the recently concluded Southeast Asian Cinemas Conference at Golden Central Hotel, July 1 to 4.

For the purposes of the meeting this Friday, my main interest is in short work, since a lot of my curatorial work involves that--especially in my upcoming/ongoing screening platforms, exhibitions and festivals (such as: http://urbannomadfilmfest.blogspot.com/).

I do hope some of the artists will be able to bring samples of their work.
